Abstract | |||
From its inception in 1999, the Clinical Genetics Branch (CGB) research portfolio has included a commitment to elucidating the counseling, behavioral and psychosocial consequences of being at increased cancer risk due to either germline or somatic genomic factors. In general, our goals include: (1) improving management of high-risk individuals and families; (2) understanding better the syndrome-specific issues related to genetic risk assessment, counseling, and testing; (3) elucidating issues and strategies related to communication of risk information between providers and patients and between patients and their family members and friends; (4) assessing medical decision-making relative to the difficult choices high-risk individuals must face and make; and (5) understanding the impact of high-risk status on mood, cognitive function and quality of life. We incorporate appropriate counseling/behavioral/psychosocial research into all our family studies projects. As of October 2015, this program has produced a total of 61 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 19 having been published since our last Site Visit, including reports based on data from: the Breast Imaging protocol, the Li-Fraumeni (LFS) study, the Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes project (IBMFS), the Familial Testicular Germ Cell Tumor study and various miscellaneous topics. |
